For over thirty one years, we at Sakura Gardens have had the great pleasure of serving up Japanese culture to the Montreal community. Our traditional menu, adorable staff and authentic atmosphere make for both a dining and learning experience.
Practically unheard of when the restaurant was established in 1973, Japanese cuisine has come to be both widely known and impossibly chic! With a great selection of tasty dishes that are light, nutritious and beautifully presented, it is no wonder it has become so popular. We at Sakura are proud to offer the typical Japanese menu. An incredible amount of choice assures that everyone will be satisfied while enjoying the fully traditional taste.
Service at Sakura is at once charming and colourful. Outfitted in bright kimonos, our waitresses are delighted to assist you, and can do so in three languages. (Japanese, French and English) Warm and friendly, they are dedicated to making your dining experience a pleasurable one.
Our cheery paper lanterns and quaint shoji dividers add to the atmosphere which is relaxed, inviting and suitable for formal or informal dining. The restaurant has a capacity of 150 people with two main dining rooms, a large sushi bar and several tatami rooms.
The dress code is casual, and reservations are recommended for week-ends, tatami rooms and large groups.
Kaiseki Ryori or cuisine Kaiseki is an artistic and gracious Japanese seasonal cuisine. A story tells that Zen Buddist priests used to keep a hot stone (seki) in their kimono pocket (kai) in order to make their fasting more bearable. The Kaiseki was originally a light meal served during the traditional tea ceremony and is also called Cha (tea) Kaiseki. Nowadays, Kaiseki Ryori is served in Japanese restaurants called Ryotei in Japanese.
Kaiseki Ryori uses seasonal fresh ingredients that are prepared in ways that enhance the original taste of the ingredients. Due to its Zen origins, Kaiseki was once vegetarian but nowadays, the modern Kaiseki meal can consist of as many as 15 different courses featuring sashimi, tempura, tofu, fish and meat dishes. Sake is also served along with the meal. Kaiseki Ryori is now prepared in diverse traditional styles and is designed to please all senses.
Exquisite care is taken in selecting ingredients and type of food as well as the wares in which it will be served. The choice of the wares is as important as the food itself to enhance the appearance and seasonal theme of the season. Ceramics, porcelains lacquer wares or glasses as well as bamboo cut can be used. Traditionally, rice and soup are served in lacquer ware with a lid.
Tadayuki Endo is from the city of Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. He worked at Takanawa Prince Hotel's Ryotei "Ean" in Tokyo before coming to Montreal and now taking on the role of head chef at Sakura.
Having the chance to share a Kaiseki meal in a Japanese traditional environment is a rare privilege and Chef Tadayuki Endo is happy to welcome you at Sakura.
