Montreal, QC
In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the acclaimed children’s book The Hockey Sweater, which
coincides with the end of the centennial year of the Montreal CANADIENS, Avenue Art Gallery is hosting
an exhibition entitled “HOCKEY, Our Love Affair” from November 26th to December 24th featuring art
by illustrator, Sheldon Cohen and to benefit the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation.
The NFB film “THE SWEATER” is based on Roch Carrier’s childhood tale which was brought to life
through the colourful illustrations of Sheldon Cohen, a Montreal-based artist and filmmaker. Cohen’s
original signed, animated cels will be available for the first time through Avenue Art Gallery, allowing
collectors this rare opportunity. The award winning film and book is a story that continues to captivate the
hearts and minds of Canadians everywhere, some thirty years later.
In light of the closing of Les Habitants year long festivities, Marina Cutler, the owner of Avenue Art, is
proud to highlight this collection, along with other hockey-related works by Terry Tomalty, son Mark
Tomalty, and Janet Nash. Nash will present her still life drawings, while Terry Tomalty brings community
rinks to life in oil on canvas, and son Mark will showcase his captivating photography.
“HOCKEY, Our Love Affair, is a chance for us to participate in this city’s hockey heritage and a perfect
opportunity to share with children by giving back through….the Montreal Canadiens Children’s
Foundation” Cutler said.
“THE SWEATER’S” framed animation cels, which come with a plaque, a Montreal Canadiens puck and a
certificate of authenticity, offer Montrealers a real piece of Canadian history.
