Maison du Parc - Montreal Health
* Report this listing
Overview | Location
In this beautifully restored Victorian home located in Montreal, men and women afflicted with HIV/AIDS can stay from a few weeks to a few months. Some, who are terminally ill, seek a presence, accompaniment and assistance on a human scale; and peace to pass away with dignity in familiar surroundings.

Still others are supported when their health wavers, during medical tests or at the start of a new treatment. We help them to regain moral and physical  strength to prepare their social rehabilitation or to augment their capabilities of coping with and controlling their lives with HIV/AIDS. Short-term stays are also available to give one’s personal caregivers a respite.

In this house there is a soul coloured by all those who have stayed here. A soul that is driven by every day gestures, by joy and laughter, by saddness, by discouragement and by hope.

Installations and Services
La Maison du Parc is accessible to people with reduced mobility. We have installed elevators, every room is equipped with an emergency buzzer. All residents have a private furnished room. A central telephone line and internet access are free of charge to residents, although one may, at their expense, install a private phone or internet access in their room.

Support, basic care, assistance with medication, scheduling of medical appointments, active listening, protection of patient rights, crisis management, and most importantly, accompanying the dying are all examples of what we do at La Maison du Parc.  Nutrition, information, awareness and maintaining a secure environment, is also part of our daily routine.

Code of Conduct for Residents
La Maison du Parc is a living milieu in which the resident collaborates according to his or her capabilities. The Code of Conduct establishes the rights and obligations of all newcomers.

Our History

La Maison du Parc was founded in Montreal in April 1991; it is one of the last community HIV/AIDS hospices still operating in Québec. La Maison du Parc welcomes all individuals suffering from HIV/AIDS in need. We have evolved to meet the ever changing needs of those infected.
  • In the early years it was an end of life hospice, a refuge for those afflicted with HIV/AIDS.
  • With the advent of new treatments, services were expanded to include assistance with a return to a normalized life and social rehabilitation.
  • La Maison du Parc was the first to implement a satellite apartment program for those to fragile and unable to cope with the disease.

Acceptance of trainees on a regular basis from Québec and abroad brought about the transfer or our expertise and sensitization.
  • The creation and management of projects aimed at quality of life with HIV/AIDS, accessibility to assistance for persons living with HIV/AIDS in isolation and the partnership between resource groups, are areas of expertise developed by La Maison du Parc over the years.
La Maison du Parc is now « all of the above »
Our Values

At La Maison du Parc, all aspects of a residents well being are addressed. Our approach is one of community action aimed at one’s potential, not one's limitations; it addresses one’s autonomy rather than dependence. We also believe that a person afflicted with HIV/AIDS has the right to confidentiality. This right not to be judged or discriminated against. We enforce the right to dignity in one’s last hours.

Life expectancy for people living with HIV/AIDS is now longer. For many, regular activities can be maintained with proper treatment and / or with modification of certain habits. For others, the disease evolves with ups and downs, with side effects, alternating between hope and discouragement.

Quality of life for those living with HIV/AIDS is a preoccupation for La Maison du Parc. It is a constant challenge to encourage and support the residents of the hospice, those who have returned home, and all HIV/AIDS sufferers in general. Through the years we have been able to adapt our services and create new projects to meet the changing needs.

For example:
Food Support Project
Meals are prepared, then vaccuum sealed for distribution to low-incomed HIV/AIDS sufferers in precarious health.
« For The Pleasure of Eating »
An update of healthy eating for people living with HIV/AIDS, this publication by La Maison du Parc presents accessible information, simple recipes, tips and ideas. Over 6,500 copies have already been distributed in French and English in most Canadian provinces, California, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden and Africa.
