Welcome to Montreal, Quebec – the second largest city in Canada. Montreal was originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary", and takes its present name from Mount Royal – which is at triple-peaked hill located in the heart of the city.

As of 2011, the city of Montreal had a population of 1,649,519 – and with metropolitan area (CMA) included, had an estimated population of 3,824,221. French is the city's official language, and is the language spoken at home by 60.5% of the population in the city of Montreal, followed by English at 21.2% and 23.4% other languages.

Montreal has the second-largest economy among Canadian cities based on GDP and is the largest in Quebec. Today Montreal is an important centre of commerce, finance, industry, technology, culture, and world affairs. Montreal’s biggest industries include aerospace, electronics, pharmaceuticals, software engineering, telecommunications, research and development, and transportation – not to mention it is the headquarters of the Montreal Exchange.

For over a century and a half Montreal was the industrial and financial centre of Canada. It played host to a variety of buildings included; factories, warehouses, mills, and refineries - which today provide a legacy of historic and architectural interest for visitors and residents to enjoy. There are 50 National Historic Sites of Canada in Montreal, more than any other city in Canada – some still in original form. Some of the most notable historic sites include; Notre-Dame de Montréal Basilica, Bonsecours Market, and Saint Joseph's Oratory.

Sports lovers will be in awe of the many things do and see in Montreal. It is home to Olympic Stadium – home of the former Montreal Expos – the largest stadium in Canada. Montreal has hosted the FIFA world cup, the Canadian Grand Prix, the 1976 Summer Olypics, and much more.
